June 8, 2020: Coronavirus Community Call

Ben gave the following updates concerning the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 from national, state, and local news sources:

Exactly 100 days since its first case of coronavirus was confirmed, New York City, which weathered extensive hardship as an epicenter of the worldwide outbreak, is set to take the first tentative steps toward reopening its doors on Monday.
Getting here took the sacrifice of millions of New Yorkers who learned to live radically different lives. More than 205,000 have been infected, and nearly 22,000 have died.

At least 109,000 people have died from coronavirus in the U.S. and at least 1,935,000 cases have been reported.

Nearly three months since the U.S. declared a national emergency over the new coronavirus, some states are reporting a rise in new cases as they lift restrictions meant to slow the virus’s spread.
California, Utah, Arizona, North Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, and Texas, among others, have all logged rises in confirmed cases, according to a Johns Hopkins tabulation of a five-day moving average.
U.S. stock-index futures wavered between small gains and losses as investors tried to gauge the strength of the economic recovery and its implications for riskier assets.
European stock markets opened lower, with the pan continental Stoxx Europe 600 falling 0.8% and regional indexes in Germany and France also declining.

Georgia reported nearly 600 new cases in a 24-hour period; Cases: 51,898 on Sunday; Deaths: 2,180, Current hospitalizations: 788

Alabama has surpassed 20,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s latest data.
As of Sunday, there are over 20,100 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Alabama. Over 259,000 people have been tested. Within the last 14 days, ADPH says there have been over 5,600 new cases and over 84,400 tests conducted.
